Assessment details:
You are required to write customised documents relevant to the following job advertisement:
1. Customised formal business letter which directly addresses the selection criteria for the advertised position
2. Customised resume which highlights interest in the position, and relevant skills and experience.

The Western Suburbs Criminal Law Firm is a private legal practice located at Level 1, 301 Droop Street Foots cray.
We are seeking a part-time Legal Administrative Assistant for 20 hours per week.Days and hours are negotiable.
The main duties will include:
Collecting and distributing mail
Delivering trolleys and documents to and from court
Scanning, printing, and photocopying documents
Maintaining office supplies
Maintaining library subscriptions
Providing support for client service staff
Assisting legal practitioners with criminal legal research for case preparation
Selection Criteria

1.Plan and draft the following documents to apply for the advertised position:
a. Customised formal business letter; and
b. Customised resume
Note: Both documents should be a ‘pair’ – formatted in the same way.
Letter format:
The business letter must comply with the requirements of a formal business letter as set out in Style Manual 4. This document is available via the resources in VU Collaborate for this unit.
The business letter should be set out as follows:
- Standard margins
- Personalised letterhead using a suitable colour, which contains your name and contact details. The contact details may be fictitious to protect your privacy.
- Use an appropriate business font that is easy to read. Arial 11 is recommended.
- Using ‘white space’ on the page
Letter content:
The letter must be written in your own words – do not use online templates or letter content. Also, it must directly address the details and instructions in the advertisement and provide information about your skills and experience relevant to the selection criteria.
The business letter must contain the following elements:
Personalised letterhead (as above)
Date
Name and contact details for the organisation
Reference number, or position title
Formal opening greeting (salutation)
Opening paragraph which outlines your interest in the role
Details of your relevant skills and experience for the advertised position
Closing paragraph
Closing salutation
Your name and e-signature
Resume format:
The resume should be set out as follows:
- Matched to the format of your letter – same colour, font and style
- Standard margins
- Personalised letterhead using a suitable colour, which contains your name and contact details. The contact details may be fictitious to protect your privacy.
- Use a consistent font throughout your resume – size may vary between headings and section content. Match this font to your application letter
- Use ‘white space’ on the page
Resume content:
An online template may be used, but both documents must be formatted as a ‘pair’.
Your resume must contain the following elements:
- Personalised letterhead with contact details (same as the cover letter)
- Summary statement of your career and interest in this role. If this role is a career change, talk about your interest in moving into a new industry or role.
- Relevant skills and experience – delete very old or irrelevant details
- Use examples of applying skills
- Education and qualifications – check spelling, and that the full formal title is used
- Referees – provide details (optional)
2.Check the documents:
Re-check the instructions for both documents
- All requirements have been met for the structure and content of both documents
- The content of your document:
is directly linked to the advertisement content
is sequenced in a logical manner - Check all content for accuracy and completeness
Spelling, grammar and punctuation
Business language is used and writing style is consistent throughout both documents
All selection criteria are addressed
Documents are structured in an appropriate format and according to instructions
3.Submit documents for assessment
- Both documents should be submitted in ONE e-file
- Submit a signed VU Assessment Cover Sheet in a separate file
- Submit on, or before the due date
- Submit via the VU Collaborate Dropbox which is labelled for this unit and assessment task
